Joseph holding his favorite kitty, Pixie
When we first moved to Zephyr Hill Farm, ordering a small batch of baby chicks from the farm store was the first of our adventures. Every morning we would be treated to a cheery chorus of peeps and cheeps. Children love to hold the tiny birds and stroke their fuzzy tummies. Sometimes the surprised baby birds are even treated to a quick smooch on the beak!
The children had all those chicks named within 24 hours, and the names were so cute, I wanted to share this old memory with you since Easter’s just around the corner.
Joseph, at age nine, had super heroes on his mind. The names he picked:
- Flash
- Dart
- Lightning
I like how they echo the speed and alertness of backyard chickens.
Catherine picked:
- Eggert
- HawkMan (who actually turned out to be Hawk Woman hahaha)
Isn’t Eggert so very distinguished?
Toddler Benjamin went with his heart and named his:
- Fuzzy Wuzzy
- Cheepy Weepy
Here are some other pet names we’ve used over the years, just to give you some inspiration:
- Dante
- Poseidon
- Pearl
- Cricket
- Claude
- Starbuck
- Sabrina
- Lafayette
- Skippy
- Contessa (Tess)
- Bandit
- Blackjack
- Caspian
- Solomon
- Foxy
- Corduroy
- George

A fresh, bright-eyed baby chick is such a wonderful reminder of nature’s renewal each Spring, and of the glorious resurrection of Christ, who gives life eternal to all who receive Him. May you have a blessed Holy Week and a glorious Easter!
LOVE backyard poultry! Such sweet, beautiful little chicks!
These are such cute names! I love them all. My daughters always pick names for our chickens too. I think it’s amazing to see what they come up with.
I love the names children choose. My oldest, when she was young used Fishie, but then also used Morton. Then my middle daughter named our cat… CAT. So we gave her a full name Catniss EverPurr, but we just call her Cat! lol
Ok, that is VERY clever! – Anne Marie
How fun it would be to name that many chicks! I love the super hero names! Too cute.
One of my favorites is currently your brother John’s, Bear Claw. This brave cat used his lethal claw recently to swat at a snake that was approaching our house. Snake…..all gone!
Bear Claw the valiant! And I thought he was just a cuddly baby.
