Ingrid’s still in diapers at age 2, but also very interested in sitting on the potty, so we got a couple of Nicki’s Diapers training pants for her to try out. Ingrid’s cousin, Gareth (3 years old), also gave them a whirl. Read through today’s review and see what you think of our experiences, then enter to win a pair for your little one!
Here are the basic features of Nicki’s training pants:
- Absorbent 100% cotton flannel core and a waterproof PUL outer
- Stretchy sides and leg elastics
- Available in small (16-21 lbs), medium (22-30 lbs) and large (30-38 lbs)
- Available in 10 colors/prints
- Retail price $9.95
- Available exclusively at Nicki’s Diapers
Only the middle part of the trainer is absorbent; the stretchy sides are made of soft, waterproof PUL. The cotton needs to be prepped several times before first use; we washed four times with our other household laundry.
Ingrid is 2 years old, so I tried both medium (Grape Soda) and large (Little Dipper) on her. The latter fit her better and are easier to get on and off. The medium trainers were on the small side, especially in the rise and waistband (you can see this in the picture at left below). The rise of size medium, unstretched, is about 13 inches; large is roughly 14 inches.
Ingrid is 2 years old and about 27 pounds right now. Since she is in the early stages of potty training, I prefer a trainer with side snaps for dealing with #2 messes (like the Imagine we previously reviewed), but it’s not a deal-breaker, especially since these are so economical. I just try to be more “on my toes” when she’s wearing her Nicki’s trainers, so I can hopefully catch her before a messy accident happens.
Absorbency is fair, which is to be expected with your typical daytime pull-up in this price range. It will catch a small accident, but not a full pee if your toddler is a heavy wetter.
Gareth is 3 years and 31 pounds. My sister-in-law, Katie, really likes this trim, pull-up style. Gareth had no complaints at all and thought they were very soft and comfortable (he’s very particular about things). He is bigger and taller than Ingrid and Katie was able to make the larges work for him, but would much prefer that Nicki’s add a size extra-large. For Gareth, size large ran small in the waist and rise (but the leg openings were fine).
UPDATE on 1/5/17: A little bird told me that size extra large will be in fact arriving soon!!
Nicki’s trainers are super easy to wash and dry. I recommend turning inside out for more thorough cleaning, especially when they are soiled or stained. At just $9.95 each, they are a great value!

If I was lucky enough to win, I think I would choose the Little Dipper! Its very unique! I love it!
Love the pull up style so it’s easier for the kids to use. I love the safari print.
Great information and good to know when I start potty training my daughter!
the Safari Sunset is so pretty, my kids love all these animals, even asked for pets from the list, so i think they would be a hit during potty time.
I would pick blue razz or safari sunset. I wish there were more “boy prints”. Though.
I wish I had known about these when my daughter was potty training! I would be happy with any of Nicki’s prints. Thanks for the opportunity, and be ware…my fat UN-caffeinated fingers misspelled some omg my entries :-/
I love the new northern lights print!
I’m sure my son would love Toolin’ Around. I’m going to start seriously training after the Christmas craziness. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the sizing. That is very helpful.
Safari sunset. We already have a cover in it and it’s beautiful
I really love both flower prints, but I wish Tree Friends came in medium!
Can I ask the weight of your test subjects for fit reference?
Hi Marissa, if you’ll look just above Ingrid’s picture and Gareth’s picture, you’ll see their weights and ages. Thanks for entering the giveaway! ~Anne
I would get size medium in Oh Deer!
These look fantastic- we’re currently checking out various training pants for my youngest! And I just LOVE the Tinkering print. What a novel idea to have tools in girls colors!
My daughter would love that!
I would love to get some training pants for my three-year-old who doesn’t seem very interested in training. I’m hoping that getting some cute/fun prints might make it more exciting to him. I haven’t bought any yet because the prices for most brands seem a little steep and I didn’t know Nicki’s were such an affordable price.
These are definitely an improve over the cotton pull up trainers that had no PUL from the old days. When there was an accident everything got soaked! I always waited until summer to potty train so they could run around with nothing over them. If I won for my grandson I would choose Tree Friends and Blue Razz.
I love how affordable these are and how they are all one piece. They remind me of super undies but at a much better price! I love the Oh Dear and Little Dipper prints. Thanks for this awesome giveaway!
We’re discussing starting some basic potty training with our little tot, and these would be a perfect start! She’s interested in the potty but doesn’t really know when she needs to go, so this should help. Love the price-point, too!
I love the Safari sunset, really nice looking.
This would be great for my child. Would choose the Oh Deer print because it is so cute!
Love the safari print! So cute for my little explorer
I love the turquoise and purple and the newest print with the pretty purples and blues. For my daughter
I LOVE Nicki’s prints and think we may be in the market for training pants soon. Thanks for the great review!
If I win I would pick a large northern lights trainer.
I love Nicki’s training pants! If I won I would want the northern lights print
I’ve got 2 in diapers, big brother is 27 months and potty training. I would love some cloth trainers for him!
Not quite ready to potty train yet. But, I am definitely gathering information. Great review. These will be on my list. I would love to see more boy prints.
Thanks for the fit run down. We are in potty training mode as well.
We’re starting to potty train! Thanks for the helpful information. I like that the Nikki’s trainers are so economical!
I like the Nicki’s Diapers Training Pants in the Northern Lights print.
We love Nicki’s diapers! Would love to try out the training pants!
I’ve been wanting to try these. I have a 2 year old who hopefully be ready this summer if not sooner! I’d love the northern lights print for her!
I would love to try these out with my daughter!! We have loved using Nickis pocket diapers and I feel like these would be just as great!
These are definitely trainers I’ve thought about getting. It’s nice to know how they actually function.
I love the many different print. they look a little bulky but I’m sure that’s because of the pull up design. At least that’s what it looks like to me.
I would get toolin around or northern lights.
I’d get the Super Undies – Pull On Undies 2.0. Everyone wants to be a super hero!
Besos Sarah
Journeys of The Zoo
Howdy, Sarah! Hope you have a wonderful holiday and New Year! ~Anne
Omgosh I love the Little Dipper training pants!!
I’d probably pick doodle bloom but they have so many cute prints!!!
I think I would get a large Blue Razz, but I really want a small Tinkering for when my newborn starts potty training.
I think tooling around is pretty cute!
I love so many of the prints! I would probably choose Northern Lights or Little Dipper only because we don’t have those prints in any style yet.
I would choose little dipper!
Thank you so much for doing a review of these training pants. My little one is starting to think about using the toilet more and we need all the information we can get! If I had to choose one print I would pick Safari Sunset (Back). I love the combo of colors!
If I would be Fortunate enough to win I would chose Sunset Safari/ Oh dear..
I would love to try a pair of these for short trips to town, my little gets so upset when I put a cloth diaper or a pull up on him. I really don’t want to make him feel like a ‘baby’ when he is doing so well with potty training but I hate tearing apart and cleaning up the car seat after an accident
Great info. I love the sunset safari print. My LO is 18 months old, so we need to start thinking about potty training!
Love the safari print. I think my grandson would too.
I’m not sure which I would pick if I won, I just know I would love to win for my babe!
I am loving the Safari Sunset print!
I have been sticking my now 16 month old on the potty for a few months now. Because we have t started fully training quite yet (waiting until after his little sibling is born in a few weeks), I have kept him in cloth diapers. I need to get to thinking about undies for the next step! These would be a great jump start for us.
I really like Nicki’s products. I love both the northern lights and safari sunset patterns.
I really appreciate the review. I have a cloth diapered two year sonwe are just starting down the road to cloth training pants. The review was really helpful and I didn’t know that Nicki’s had their own brand! I’m off to look!
I like the price point and nikis did have cute prints.
I will start potty training in shortly and would love to have a pair of Safari.
