If you love prefolds, it’s hard to imagine anything better than those soft, fluffy and absorbent diapers. But add a touch of bamboo, and you just might have something nicer. In fact, I definitely prefer our bamboo/cotton Diaper Rite prefolds to regular cotton. Because many of you shop at Diaper Junction using my affiliate link (for which I am extremely thankful!), I have been able to use my commissions to purchase some Diaper Rite bamboo prefolds to test out and share with you today. My friends at Diaper Junction were also kind enough to send me one in the newborn size and the large size for comparison, since we currently don’t have those in our stash.
Diaper Rite bamboo prefolds come in packs of six, and start at $13.95 for each pack. The fabric content is 55% rayon from bamboo and 45% organic cotton.
Here are the measurements after being washed a few times:
Newborn/Extra Small (natural stitching) – 11×12 (suggested weight is 6 to 12 lbs)
Small (purple stitching) – 12×13.5 (suggested weight is 8 to 18 lbs)
Medium (green stitching) – 14×16 (suggested weight is 14 to 30 lbs)
Large (orange stitching) – 16×17.5 (suggested weight is 26 to 40 lbs)
The most noticeable jump in size is when you go from small to medium.
Here are the different sizes of bamboo prefolds trifolded inside a one-size Diaper Junction cover. When the prefolds were used this way (laid in a cover and not pinned on a baby), I found the sizes corresponded best this way:
One-size cover on smallest rise setting: use extra small prefold
One-size cover on medium rise setting: use small prefold
One-size cover on largest rise setting: use medium prefold
The large or toddler size Diaper Rite bamboo prefold extends a bit from the front of the cover, even when it’s completely opened up. At close to 18 inches, it’s pretty long. You can fold it down in the front but it will create some bulk.
Tip: If you are planning to primarily Snappi, Boingo or pin these prefolds on your baby, you might want to buy the next size up, so you’ll have extra fabric to pull up and around the waist. I primarily trifold ours in a cover, and small works fine for Ingrid, who is actually 11 months old but small for her age. In this picture, where the diaper is pinned on, she’s actually in a medium.
A diaper fastener grips the bamboo/cotton blend fabric with no problem.
Erik is 2 years, short and slender, weighing under 30 pounds; the medium is perfect for him trifolded in a cover, and I think he can wear these until he potty trains so we won’t need to buy the larges. So just keep in mind that your toddler might not necessarily need the “toddler” size. By the way, Erik is wearing his bamboo prefold under a NEW COVER from Diaper Rite – it’s a brand new print – dark blue with a colorful outer space theme! This new print is available now in several Diaper Rite products, and more stock is on the way.
Flats and AIO diapers have been working so well for us that I wasn’t using prefolds much at all….until I started testing these. Now I’m using them just as much as the flats! I know old-fashioned cotton is nice, but can’t deny the appeal of these bamboo-blend prefolds. They cost a little more than regular prefolds, but not that much. And I have found they are softer and more absorbent than standard prefolds. Really! Ingrid can nap in her small bamboo prefold, but not a regular cotton one. Erik has a medium overnight with 1 cotton Diaper Rite doubler or a large alone. So basically, that’s a night-worthy diaper for less than $5, proving you don’t have to spend a lot to find a night time solution.
Another bonus: these prefolds have no tags. Diaper Rite stamps the brand on them instead.
Care is very easy: I wash with my other diapers in our HE top loader. It does take a full cycle for these to dry completely.
If you are itching to see what bamboo prefolds are like, or want to add MORE to your baby’s arsenal, there’s a giveaway! One reader will win a 6-pack of Diaper Rite bamboo prefolds – choose your size (subject to availability). This giveaway is open to US and Canadian residents. Good luck! GIVEAWAY CLOSED

I would love some large prefolds!
Alicia says
What would you recommend for a thick legged baby? Seriously, all her chunk is in her thighs. I’ve never used cloth before, but I’m wanting to start and I want to do it right.
Anne says

Marquita Johnson-Busby says
How do you care for bamboo prefolds? Is it any different than the organic cotton? And just for the record size medium please and thank you.
Anne says
My wash routine is the same: pre rinse, hot wash with detergent and 1 extra rinse. Thanks for entering the giveaway! ~Anne
Stacey Blain-ruiz says
I think medium would work, but lo growing so fast, great review, love to see sizes after wash next to cover.
Jessica McCormack says
I would most likely get a medium prefold… but a large is tempting for extra absorbency at night!
Kait WK says
I love the small prefolds we’ve been using the same size for 12months! We may need the next size up if we won but they are just amazing!
Dawne says
I’d love mediums. Do they Snappi the same as cotton?
Anne says
Yes, I’ve pinned them just fine with both Snappi and Boingo
Paige Hancock says
I would love the small prefolds!
KW says
Would love to win some small profiles for my rainbow baby coming in December! 🙂

Tara says
I would love to try the smalls on my next little one! 🙂
Theresa Hover says
How do bamboo blend prefolds hold up in hard water compared to cotton prefolds? We have super hard water. If I won, I would probably pick out the size small prefolds; we would love to give them a try!
Anne says
We tested our water and it’s moderately hard. I’m able to get these profiles good and clean as long as I’m doing a long hot wash and a little bit more Tide or Arm n Hammer than the bottle recommends. We’ve been using for about 3 months and I haven’t noticed any wear.
Theresa Hover says
Thanks!
Sarah f. says
I absolutely love everything diaper junction! Amazing quality for affordable prices. My kiddos are actually wearing their bamboo prefolds for nighttime right now.
Thank you for the chance to win!

I love prefolds. My little super soaker can fill up a cotton one though. I’m slowly making the switch to bamboo and hemp.
Carolyn says
I LOVE prefolds for the newborn stage, so I’d probably go with smalls (so I could Snappi them on my next baby initially, then later use them trifolded and then as a booster when the baby is *sniff, sniff* a toddler!) 😉
Anne says
To even think about your newborn growing up is not allowed!
Lauren C says
Thanks for doing a giveaway! Expecting twins, I would love some large prefolds. 🙂
Anne says
Oh, congrats twice over!
Kristin says
We’ve been borrowing some prefolds and the time is about up on the borrowing. Initially I didn’t think I’d like prefolds& covers but have found I really love them! These would be perfect to help build our stash of prefolds before the borrowed ones have to be returned! I believe the small or medium size would be great for us!

My baby girl is only two months old, but she’s fairly big. I’d probably go with mediums for longevity sake. 🙂
Amanda Austin says
We would get large, because we fasten them with a snappi and my son is growing up fast! (still in diapers, though). I’ve never tried the bamboo, as the prefolds we have are Bummis made with organic cotton. These look really comfy.
Ashley Gaetano says
I think I’d get the size small :}
Dandi D says
Does the smallest size work well for a newborn? I tried to use prefolds when my son was a newborn, but they were too bulky. Maybe a smaller size would work better?
Anne says
We don’t have a newborn right now, so I was only able to measure the newborn Diaper Rite prefold and try it out in a newborn cover, which it fits in just fine. Have you considered preemie prefolds? I have used those before, in the first week or so. -Anne
Anne Adams says
Are these as soft and trim as their bamboo flats are? I’d love some smalls to try 🙂
Anne says
We have the bamboo flats and the profiles are slightly trimmer. Both are silky soft though.

Jennifer D. says
I’d pick medium.
Samantha Mills says
I think I would choose the medium prefolds. I only have cotton prefolds now, and I would love to try bamboo to see if I notice a big difference.

Liesel D. says
I’d love to get some large prefolds to add to my stash. Having two littles in cloth means my prefolds are getting used pretty hard! I have cotton now but I’d love to try some bamboo.
amy s. says
I’d definitely get the newborn size if I win. When I started my stash (before E arrived) I thought I’d save money by getting one-size covers and small prefolds, but after seeing how huge they are on my itty bitty beanpole (never mind the fact that half of them don’t even fit!) I learned the error of my ways. Sized diapers are the way to go (for us at least).
Jenna D says
Ièd choose the medium size DR prefolds – these would be our first prefolds in our stash!
Sarah Elyce says
When I first started cloth diapering, about 5 months ago, I didn’t care for prefolds with covers. I now love them, especially bamboo prefolds!

I love prefolds and covers with my newborn, find it very easy and fast-drying too! I have some bamboo-blended inserts for AI2s later but haven’t tried them yet. I’d love bamboo/organic cotton blended prefolds in the larger sizes (like small or medium) too, so thanks for the review!
Anne says
Thanks for the feedback about the prefolds on a newborn!

I love these prefolds. The newborn size fit snappi’d around my daughter until about 10 lbs. the smallest fit best now and still fit under the Diaper Rite newborn size covers. I loved the price and now love the performance.
ashley says
What are the dimensions after washing/shrinking?
I’d love to try the extra small or small size dependingon the answer to the Q above!
Anne says
Hi Ashley, the measurements are in the review.

william gossage says

Geneveigh Sewell says
I recently just fell in love with prefolds! I’d choose medium.
Sarah Hayes says
I think the medium would be best for us. I love using prefolds tri folded in a cover. that has always been our go-to. they are so easy to use and clean. how much would you say they shrink?
Anne says
The measurements in the post are after they are washed. I would say they shrank 10% or so.
Jessica S. says
I think I would need size medium, I have 22 lb 2 year old. Do you think that would work?
Anne says
Sounds right to me!
Mary Beivides says
Would love some small sized prefolds, and thanks for introducing me to this brand. I will definitely be checking them out whether I win or not!

Pam Gross says
I would like large prefolds
Kristin D says
My baby’s not even born yet, but I think I’ve become a cloth diaper addict! So many moms love their pre-folds…and they’re so versatile. I already have quite a few in the smaller sizes, so I’d probably get some mediums for when he gets bigger.
Lindsay says
What a fabulous review!!! I have their small cotton prefolds and love them. I have their bamboo flats and I’m just not a flats girl. I just ordered another pack of medium cotton prefolds because I love to wrap them!!!

Anne says
Nope, you’re not just seeing things! There is only 1.5 inches difference between the newborn and small, and between the medium and the large. The biggest size jump is between small and medium; the difference there is about 2.5 inches. ~Anne

We currently use Osocozy prefolds; however, we love diaper junction. So I am very interested in buying these prefolds because we also LOVE our DiaperRite covers. I am curious the absorbency difference between bamboo and cotton. We have only used unbleached cotton. Hoping bamboo will have better absorbency!
Melissa H. says
I think I would choose the medium size. We have some small ones, and they’re very useful still!
Amelia says
I just gave birth to my first child so I am new to cloth diapering! We are using prefolds and covers and would LOVE to try these out in a medium! I also have a question: what is the difference between prefolds and flats? I just heard of flats, but don’t know anything about them. Thanks!
Anne says
Congrats, Amelia! A flat diaper is simple a big flat piece of fabric. You have to fold it to either pin on your baby, or lay in a diaper cover. They are absorbent and the easiest kind of diaper to get clean (just one layer of fabric). ~Anne
april h says
I think I’d try the extra small. Our little one is only two weeks old and a bit small (6lbs). I have some of the diaper rite cotton prefolds in size small, and although they work well, they are still bit bulky on her. Then when she gets bigger, the prefolds will make great inserts for the covers!
Lety says
I would pick medium because I figure I can just scrunch it up for smaller rises, and then I’d only need one size.

Mea A. says
Hi Anne!
I’d really like the medium. I appreciate your review, very helpful. Do you still recommend diaper liners for cloth diaper safe bum creams?
Anne says
I would say it depends on the formulation of the cream, and the type of diaper you are using. I have found it’s a bit tougher to rinse out things like beeswax and lanolin from pocket diapers and other “stay dry” styles, even though beeswax and lanolin are purported to be “cloth diaper safe.” Also, zinc oxide is generally ok, but some mothers have found it leaves faint stains on diapers. Again, this depends on the way the zinc is incorporated into that particular formula. Unless you’re using something really simple like an olive oil or coconut oil based ointment, it wouldn’t hurt to use a fleece or flushable liner. ~Anne
Morgan Ragan says
I think I would get the large prefolds! I’m just now starting to get into prefolds. My son wears mostly pockets and aio. I’ve heard many great things about prefolds though. Good luck everybody!!:)

Aubrey Forbis says
what would you start out with knowing you’ll have a newborn?

It would depend on the estimated size of your newborn, although I know that’s hard to guess. The extra-small should work, at least for a few weeks.
Amy Lewis says
I would love some in size small or medium!
Jen B says
I’d need a large…sadly my day trained daughter is still not able to stay dry at night.
Ashley Lister says
I’d love to try medium or large. We have newborn size and I loved them for the newborn stage – but we are still using them padfolded at 6 months and 20 lbs mainly because my husband likes them. I really should get some bigger sizes 😀
Vanessa says
This might convince me to try them.
Theresa Hover says
Great review! It’s nice to see all the sizes for comparison! We would love to have some size smalls to try, I wonder if they would stay softer with our hard water than cotton?
Kadie says
I would love to try bamboo prefolds! My “working-on-it” pre-potty trained toddler is a biggie baby and some of those sized inserts I have just aren’t quite covering our bases. My 5.5 month old is a biggie too! 20lbs. I think I’ll need the toddler sized ones!
K says
We have used 100% cotton prefolds for almost six years straight, on three babies, and they are our favorite foolproof, leak free option. We have never tried the bamboo variety!
