I like to try new things. I also like unique prints. So when Wink Diapers had a sale that coincided with the need for a few extra covers in our system, I nabbed Starlight for Ingrid (six months) and Snail Trail for Erik (two years).
Wink covers come in two different sizes; I’ll include both in this review to help you compare. Here are the basic features of the covers:
- “Wipe and re-use” TPU waterproof material
- Front and back flaps inside
- Back elastics
- Double gussets
- Hip snaps (to keep the wings from sagging) and crossover snaps (for tiny waists)
- Adjustable front rise with four rows of snaps
- Covers that fit from 6 to 16 pounds are $9.99 and covers that fit from 8 to 35 pounds are $11.99
- Available in 5 solid colors and 18 prints
Here are the two covers again, side by side, to show you the difference between the wing size, width across and depth of the flaps inside. Here are the numbers:
- The “small” cover has a 3″ front flap inside and the crotch is about 5.5″ at its widest.
- The “larger” cover has a 3.5″ front flap inside and the crotch is about 6.5″ at its widest.
Wink diaper covers will work with just about anything in your stash, with the possible exception of a really plush fitted. I typically pad fold a flat or trifold a prefold and lay in the cover. For an idea of sizing, a small Geffen prefold coordinates well with the smaller cover and a medium to large Geffen prefolds works fine with the bigger cover.
Wink also sells wipes, bamboo inserts and hemp inserts. I have one of the 55% hemp/45% organic cotton doublers and it’s very trim and absorbent. One side is smooth and the other is fleecy. It shrinks (a bit unevenly, since two different fabrics are used) to about 12.25 inches x 5 inches and so is a good size for infants around 10 pounds and up.
Fit: Wink covers are very soft, snug and trim-fitting. As mentioned above, they can be used with just about anything. Because fitted diapers vary in terms of wing size, not every fitted in our stash is completely covered by the Wink shells. All of our flats, prefolds and inserts work great, though. The back elastic, which creates a little ruffle, is a cute touch.
I first tried the 8-35 cover on Ingrid, since she’s about 14 pounds, but couldn’t get the fit at the waist quite right. The crossover snaps were too tight, but fastening right at the middle was too loose. Switching her to the 6 to 16 pound cover did the trick, and she even has one more snap on the rise to go. Erik, who’s two years old, fits just fine in the 8-35 pound cover, also with one more snap setting on the rise to spare. Based on our experience, I think the sizing of the two different covers is very accurate, and allows you a wider range of fit options.
Quality: These covers are very well made and I haven’t had any issues with the elastics or snaps so far. The only thing I’ve noticed is the white elastic on the inner gusset gets dingy-looking and stains easily.
And now, here are Wink diapers in action!
Wink is a very economical and versatile diapering system that I can definitely recommend without reservation. If covers and inserts aren’t your thing, there are also AIO’s and pockets. Everything includes a 12-month warranty on manufacturing and workmanship defects. Wink Diapers are produce ethically in China. The website explains: “providing affordable products makes it necessary for us to use international manufacturing. We only partner with manufacturers that utilize fair trade practices, including minimum wages, safe working environments, and environmental sustainability such as the prohibition of GMO’s. All our fabrics are certified to Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 and the CPSIA.”
As far as customer service goes, I’ve been really been pleased with the fast shipping of all my orders and owner Bailey’s responsiveness and helpfulness. She has a great desire to help families get started with cloth at affordable prices, but without sacrificing quality or service in the event of a problem.

How many cloth diapers do you need for an entire week? I am thinking of doing this for my 3rd. Thank you!
Anne says
Hi Sarah, it would depend on how many times you do laundry. Most families average 2-3 days between diaper loads. Two dozen diapers will last two days or more, so you’ll still have a few to wear while the others are in the wash. ~Anne

Oh wow! Now is that for newborn to age one? Do you put on a new cover for each time you change?
Anne says
You can definitely reuse each cover a few times, so you don’t have to buy as many of those (maybe 6-10). But for inserts (flats, prefolds, etc.), I would definitely suggest 2 dozen. ~Anne
