BabyKicks are one of the most popular and widely recommended diaper inserts on the market. With hemp as a primary component, they are both highly absorbent and trim. The BabyKicks brand has become synonymous with hemp; here’s why they love this fabric. BabyKicks diapers are manufactured in the Unites States.
I already had some Duz-it-All inserts in my collection; BabyKicks also sent some regular, premium and one-size JoeyBunz at no cost to facilitate my review.
Made from certified organic 55% hemp/45% cotton, JoeyBunz inserts have a contoured shape and serged edges.
- Regular inserts are 6 layers of hemp/cotton and come in size small (13.5 inches), medium (15.25 inches) and large (17.5 inches).
- Premium inserts are two 4 layer pieces of hemp/cotton sewn together at one end come in size small (13.5 inches), medium (15.25 inches) and large (17.5 inches). These are my favorites of the three styles because they dry the quickest.
- One-size inserts are 6 layers of hemp/cotton and have fold-to-fit lines stiched at the narrow end.
At only 1/8 of an inch thick, JoeyBunz are fantastic when it comes to boosting the absorbency of any diaper while adding very little bulk. Two or three JoeyBunz inserts, all by themselves, can even function as a nighttime diaper.
My Duz-it-All insert is a flat rectangle of two layers of the same jersey knit hemp/cotton, and shrinks to 13×17 when washed. It has a lot of great uses:
- Trifold and stuff in a pocket diaper or lay in a cover
- Keep on hand as an emergency diaper
- Burp cloth
- Changing pad for small babies
- Car set pad
JoeyBunz inserts can be stuffed into pocket diapers, wrapped inside a flat or prefold, or just laid on top of a diaper. They are versatile and thirsty, and can be laid right up against your baby’s skin, if you don’t feel like stuffing.
Any drawbacks to hemp? Some claim that it is prone to odors; I’ve never had this happen with our hemp diapers. Maybe that’s the case for 100% hemp (JoeyBunz are hemp/cotton blend)? Hemp is prone to staining, however. While it isn’t as soft as bamboo or organic cotton, the jersey blend used in JoeyBunz is nice and smooth.
In the first photo below, this one-size pocket diaper is opened up to it’s largest setting and the JoeyBunz One-Size is folded down in front. In the middle photo, a JoeyBunz Premium (size medium) is tucked into the one-size pocket diaper shell. Size medium fits great with most one-size diapers on their medium/large setting. Size large JoeyBunz are ideal for toddlers.
You can find BabyKicks JoeyBunz inserts with free shipping at retailers like Diaper Safari and Sweetbottoms Baby Boutique. The Duz-it-All inserts are sold at Little Spruce Organics and Nicki’s. Choice of thread color at the edges varies (mine is yellow).
Enter to win TWO JoeyBunz inserts in your choice of in stock style/size! Open to US and Canadian residents. Good luck!

I would try the one-size. I have some premium inserts and love them!!
Carrie Barron says
I would choose one size inserts. Thanks!
Ashley says
These look great! I’d love to try the premium version stuffed in a pocket. Anyone know if these are enough to use alone in a pocket for a heavier-wetting toddler? Anyone tried them in a BG 4.0 to know how well they will fit?
Anne says
I haven’t tried them in a bumGenius, but they do work fine in my Diaper Safari pockets. Two or three together might get a heavy wetter through the night. ~Anne
Kimberly Worrell says
I use 2 regular size large inserts stuffed in bg 4.0s for my heavy wetter during the day. They work very well, but i think the mediums would fit better, you have fold the large ones over to make them fit lengthwise.
petra says
I only just started to use inserts that are not the microfiber included with the diapers I bought, and have found that natural fibers are way better than artificial. My current favourite are geffen baby, but admittedly I have only tried that and thirsties. Your review of these inserts has me tempted to order more fluff, though – I can’t tell if that’s a good thing. Do you think any of the inserts would be good for overnight on a small baby?
petra says
My baby helpfully pressed enter for me before I could finish my last entry. The email address I am subscribed to you under is petracoleslaw at gmail dot com. Haha.
Anne says
The size small works really well for young infants (6 months and smaller). ~Anne
Christy says
It’s amazing how thin it is! I think they all look so versatile.
Theresa Hover says
This was a really nice, concise review! I like how you showed the inserts inside a diaper for comparison in size. If I won, I would chose 2 of the premium inserts, 1 small & 1 medium 🙂
Ariana says
I would pick one size. I love the absorbancy and natural fibers
Stacie says
I use inserts similar to these at night time and they are great! Could always use a few more 🙂 I like how you placed them in a diaper to see how they fit… sometimes just being told measurements isn’t enough.
Megan J says
Thanks for the review. I would try the premium insert.
sherry blamer says
I love the one size insert. I love that it resist build up and odor.

Wendy says
I have been wanting to try the hemp inserts for a while now.
Kerri says
I think I’d go with the premium inserts. Any recommendations on what size of insert fits what size of baby best?
Anne says
Small are about 13 inches, so they would work best for 6 months or younger. Mediums are 15 inches and work with most “one size” diapers. Large inserts (17 inches) are ideal for toddlers. ~Anne
Jennifer says
So cool that the inserts can be a nighttime solution!
vickie couturier says
the one size would be my choice
Susanne C.M.T. says
I would love to try these. 99% of my stash of inserts is micro fibre but I’ve heard lots of good things about hemp, bamboo & bamboo charcoal. Are these ok next to baby’s skin or is it better to keep them inside the pocket?
Anne says
Hemp is fine right up against a baby’s skin! ~Anne

I’d like to try these. I recently bought some hemp/cotton doublers and I love them. I wanted to try BabyKicks, but they weren’t sold at the store I shopped at. I think I’d like to try two medium inserts or maybe one small and one medium. It would be a hard choice! I like the Duz-it-All style, too, but I didn’t see those at Diaper Safari.

Jean Marie Connolly says
I’m not a fan of the one size flat, I do really like the regular inserts. I’m pregnant with our last baby but I’m still cloth diapering my 1yr old. Since I don’t know what the sex of the baby yet, I would choose a gender neutral diaper like the Bummis Super Brite Diaper Cover, in green. Thanks for the giveaway!
Becky says
I’d probably try the Duz-it-All because I lean towards flats (or at least less layers when washing) if I’m going to change out the microfiber that came with my diapers. I hate how long prefolds/multi-layered natural inserts (Looking at you Thirsties!)take to dry despite how well they actually work.
I’m not sure if it’s okay to dry hemp inserts on something other than low if they don’t have snaps… If so then I might like the one-size….
Anne says
I had that same issue with the super thick Thirsties hemp inserts. They do take incredibly long to dry. For the record, I do dry all my hemp on medium, and haven’t had problems. ~Anne
Amy P says
I like that hemp is so thirsty without being bulky. And I like that the one-size kind are tapered on one end.
