My husband and I are fortunate to be the godparents of three wonderful children – from three different families. Being a godparent or “sponsor” is an ancient tradition which dates back to the earliest centuries of the Church. If you are curious about what role a godparent fills, the Code of Canon Law states that he must “help the baptized to lead a Christian life in harmony with baptism, and to fulfill faithfully the obligations connected with it.” One way that godparents can do this is to celebrate important sacramental milestones like First Communion and Confirmation, and even marriage and Holy Orders later in life.
