Diaper Safari Cover and Trifold Insert Review

March 26, 2013 by Anne Marie 120 Comments

Spread it around!

Last year, Diaper Safari introduced its own line of one-size pocket diapers and they have already become very popular! Now, they have added a waterproof one-size cover and trifold insert to their store. Our friends at Diaper Safari sent us one of each to try out, and so today I’ll share our experiences with you.

I picked the red color called “Cardinal.” Here’s the cover on the smallest and largest settings:

The trifold inserts consist of two layers of a 70% bamboo/30% cotton blend on one side and a stay-dry synthetic suedecloth on the other side. Before washing, the inserts measure 16 inches by 13.5 inches. Because one size is made of natural fibers and the reverse is synthetic, they shrink a little bit unevenly, but it doesn’t affect performance. Here’s a photo of the insert next to a Flip organic; they are very similar in size. If you look at the edge of the Diaper Safari insert, you can see how the edges roll up just a bit because the bamboo/cotton side shrinks more than the suedecloth in the dryer.

The Diaper Safari trifold insert can be laid inside a cover for a very trim diapering system. You can choose to put the stay-dry fabric or the natural fibers up against your baby’s bottom. Fold on the short side for smaller babies and on the longer size for older babies and toddlers.

This is a soft, sturdy and absorbent insert and I’ve been nothing but pleased with the performance. As I mentioned before, because there are both natural and synthetic fabrics used in this insert, it shrinks unevenly, so when you lay it out flat the two different layers don’t line up perfectly and this causes the edges to curl up a little. This is mildly annoying but really more of an aesthetic issue, because the insert still trifolds easily and is nice and smooth on the top.

I like the trim fit of this cover. It’s almost identical to the Diaper Safari pockets. Very trim, but roomy enough to stuff with even the bulkiest prefolds and fitteds. The PUL is nice and smooth, and the waist tabs are good and stretchy. I’m a big fan of double snaps on the wings, but the single snaps on this cover get the job done, especially since there are hip snaps included.

Here’s the cover on my kiddos. Erik, at just 10 pounds, is not using the insert since he’s so little. I would say the insert fits 6 months and up. So in these photos, Erik is wearing one of his newborn prefolds under the Diaper Safari cover.

It’s not very trim on Erik, but it does hold everything in.

Here’s Susanna at 18 months and about 23 pounds:

And my toddler, Samuel, who is almost 3 years old – and 35 pounds. He’s probably going to “max out” this cover pretty soon since we’ve got it snapped completely out and it’s pretty low in the rise.

In my opinion, Diaper Safari has come up with a great-fitting and very economical diapering system. The covers are just $— each and are “wipe and re-use” so you can get a lot of mileage of out them. The inserts, which feature both natural and stay-dry fibers, are only $5.99. That’s less than competitors like the Thirsties Duo Hemp Prefold and Flip Organic inserts.

The Diaper Safari covers come in a delicious assortment of colors! My favorites are Cardinal (red) and Steel (silver).

And did I mention the FREE SHIPPING? That is such a great perk and it keeps me going back to Diaper Safari time and time again. Plus, their service is prompt and super friendly. It’s the total package!

Ok, here’s how to add some of the new Diaper Safari covers and trifold inserts to your stash:

Hi Laura, if I were to pick the top 3 diaper covers in my stash, they would be first the Sweet Pea one-size, and then Flips and then the Diaper Safari. Sweet Peas and DS covers definitely have the edge as far as price goes (the former is 10 and the latter is 9). Sweet Peas ranked the highest for me in terms of durability; the elastic seems to stay stronger a bit longer than the Flips. Fortunately for all three brands, they are backed by WONDERFUL customer service, so you’ll get fast help if any problems should happen to arise. Thanks for your question and for entering! ~Anne

It’s really easy to fold the insert, Becky. Just do it in thirds; fold in left side and the fold in right side. That’s it! Takes just a few seconds and then you lay it in the cover. No pins needed. For one baby, I’d say a stash of 6 covers plus 24 inserts or prefolds. This should last you a few days between each washing. And you can save lots of money by getting free shipping. That’s something I love about http://www.diapersafari.com/?AffId=38! ~Anne

I love the Tulip color. They happen to be my favorite flower too 🙂 I love all of your cloth diaper reviews and want to say thank you for always taking the time to show pictures of how they fit and work.

Ooo! How nice to do a giveaway! I like the diaper color nautical…but who am I kidding that is just my pick for gender neutrality. They are all great colors! Very good pricing too. I would love to win to start my stash! 🙂
